South Africa’s wild fisheries sector contributes ZAR 6 billion (€385.3 million/$430 million) to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), accounting for 0.4 percent, according to Maisie Katz, from the National Resources Conservation Service.
Around 734,000 people derive their livelihood from wild fisheries in South Africa, which is predominantly led by the hake trawl industry.
"We also fish for pelagics, horse mackerel, tuna, swordfish, but hake is by far the biggest,” said Katz.
In fact, the hake sector is worth ZAR 3.5 billion (€224.8
