Industry sources canvassed by IntraFish gave a mixed welcome to the news of increased cod quotas in the Barents Sea and Icelandic waters for 2013.
While some are bearish because of the tough markets in southern Europe, others are confident the world market will absorb the additional volumes at good prices.
One thing all sources agreed on, however, is that the proposed quota increases is positive news for fisheries management.
With the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) recommending a possible 25 percent increase in the 2013 quota for cod in the Barents Sea to 940,000 metric tons and Iceland's Marine Research Institute (MRI) recommending the government increase the cod quota for the year starting Sept.
