The Copper River sockeye salmon run is going strong as fishermen head into the second half of the season.

The harvest of 1.23 million to date is slightly lower than the catch last year at this time, but the sizes of the fish are bigger this year on average.

Average weights are up at 7 pounds this year, compared to an average of six pounds, Jeremy Botz, gillnet area management biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, told IntraFish.
