Shrimp traders in the United States and Europe are expecting backlash from new reports in UK newspaper The Guardian that allege the Thai farmed shrimp industry is part of a value chain that begins with forced slave labor on ships harvesting fish for shrimp feed, but it is unclear just how severe the impact may be.
Already, damage control has begun at major retailers including Walmart, Costco, Tesco, Carrefour and others, with the groups offering The Guardian responses to the report primarily outlining the rigor of its sourcing.
