2008 was a bleak year for Scan Aqua, which owned 15 lisenses to farm sea urchins in Northern Norway, from Hordaland to Finmark.

The group posted a loss before taxes of NOK 5.9 million (€737,000/ $1 million) that year, on revenue of NOK 2 million (€250,000/ $340,000).

By then, it had also spent all of its starting capital of NOK 10 million (€1.2 million/ $1.7 million).

Roughly half of that went to finance a 13.5 meter-long ship, also called Scan Aqua.

At the time of going bankrupt, the company was led by CEO Jan Arve Gjovik and chairman Jan Kristoffersen.
