It’s only a couple of years since French and English fishermen were last at loggerheads over the Channel scallop fishery as tensions boiled over.
It’s also encouraging to see both sides, as well as policymakers and scientists, coming together to discuss the problems – both their own problems and the ones that are common to both sides.
Daniel Lefevre, President of the Comité Régional des Pêches de Basse-Normandie made the opening comments as the Gap 2 meeting on the Channel scallop fishery opened in the UK port of Brixham, bringing together mainly French and British fishermen to discuss their largely shared fishery, as well as scientists, officials, managers and others.
