Sausalito, California-based Safe Catch is launching what it says is the first brand of 100 percent mercury tested canned tuna with its newly developed technology that screens every fish for purity.

The Safe Catch brand touts purity levels more strict than the Consumer Report's "Low Mercury" criteria limit and average set in 2014 for pregnant moms and children is the only canned tuna to surpass the purity and Omega 3 criteria for "best seafood" set by the Environmental Working Group.

A recent University of Michigan study suggested that one of the greatest risk factors for autoimmunity among women of childbearing age may be associated with exposure to mercury such as through seafood.
