With the sablefish season nearly complete in Alaska and on hold in Washington, Oregon and British Columbia, buyers and processors are wondering where they are going to get enough raw materials to meet the growing consumer demand.
Many fishermen along the West Coast who would normally be catching sablefish this time of year had shifted focus to coldwater shrimp where it's "easy money."
Sources told IntraFish the majority of fishermen will resume catching their quota of sablefish later this fall so they can take advantage of as many seasons as possible.
