Russia's largest Alaska pollock fishing firms said they would invest in 15 large-sized trawlers, worth around RUB 60 billion (€812.4 million/$915.5 million), if the government is willing to allocate individual quotas for the new vessels.

This announcement comes as Russia's fisheries agency Rosrybolovstvo works on amending Russia's fisheries laws. The new laws are aimed at encouraging fleet renovation at domestic shipyards and developing the on-shore fish processing sector.

In reaction to the new proposals, several major Alaska pollock catchers, including the Russian Fishery Company -- the country's largest with a quota of 206,200 metric tons in 2015 -- are calling on President Vladimir Putin to allocate individual quotas to any new builds.
