Russia’s overall seafood exports jumped 15.6 percent in the first two months of 2016 from last year to 291,200 metric tons, driven by strong pollock sales overseas, according to preliminary data by Russia’s statistics service Rosstat.

Pollock exports reached 122,886 metric tons in January and Febduary, Rosstat reported, accounting for 42.2 percent of the total Russian seafood exports.

Despite the export boost, however, domestic sales have become an increasingly important driver for the pollock sector.

During a meeting last week on 2017 quotas at Russia’s federal fishery department, Rosrybolovstvo, Director Ilya Shestakov proposed Russia’s Pollock Catchers Association develop a draft for a medium-term program for increasing pollock supplies to the domestic market.
