Russian parliament members recently drafted a federal law proposal which would ban floating nets in industrial and coastal fisheries of anadromous fish species in inland sea waters, territorial sea and exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of the Russian Federation.

MP Irina Yarovaya presented the document and called the drift-net fishing "a barbaric way of fishery" which leads to "huge losses to the environment and for the budget."

The WWF-Russia assessed the damage caused by driftnetting twice – in 2004 and 2010, in particular assessed its financial damage in 2011.
