Foreign investors buying a stake higher than 25 percent in Russian fishing firms will be required to obtain permission from a government commission on foreign investments.

Amendments to the law 'On the Procedure for Foreign Investment in Business Entities of Strategic Importance,' which Russia's President Vladimir Putin approved in October this year, will take effect in early December.

So far, such approvals were required only for the acquisition of large-scale fishing companies, but this is now set to change.

Russia's federal agency for fisheries, Rosrybolovstvo, openly communicated the presence of foreign players in the Russian fishing sector is "excessive."

"There
