The seven factories passed Russian inspections, officials said, and will be permitted to continue exporting herring after the ban goes into effect Nov. 15.

All other factories -- including many in southern Norway which have not yet been inspected -- will be banned from selling herring into Russia.

Russia is the biggest market for Norwegian herring.

The new herring rules are similar to those imposed by Russian last year on Norwegian salmon exports.

The factories permitted to continue exporting herring are Egersund NOR (Tromso); Bernt Hansen (Sommaroy); Nergaard Sild (Senjahopen); Lofoten Pelagiske (Svolvaer); Fryseriet (Loedingen); Domstein Bodo (Bodo); and Modolv Sjoeset Pelagic (Traena).
