With major oyster producing areas in British Columbia closed to harvesting, oyster supply is slim as the Fourth of July holiday approaches, leaving customers in the lurch, sources told IntraFish.
“People understand, but they’re frustrated nonetheless,” Jefferds said. ”It’s like a kid waiting in line for an ice cream truck, and then they get up to the front, and there’s no ice cream.”
As of Friday, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans listed 22 areas as closed to oyster harvesting due to paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), more commonly known as red tide.
