America’s only home-grown aquaculture industry is fading fast as record feed prices join to the mix of challenges catfish producers face.
“It’s a very inopportune time – a time when the industry already had a lot of stress and damage,” Dick Stevens, CEO of Consolidated Catfish, told IntraFish.
The US drought has sent grain prices soaring, particularly for corn and soybeans – two major ingredients in catfish feed. Soybean prices are up to $622.91 (€481.29) per metric ton – the highest they have been at any time during the last 30 years.
