Ramifications from a 68 percent reduction in Peru's anchovy quota aren't likely to come right away, but they will inevitably arrive for many players in the fishmeal and aquaculture industry.
"Six to twelve months ahead, this will have a negative affect on feed costs," Nordea Markets senior analyst Kolbjorn Giskeodegaard told IntraFish.
The fishery supplies anchovies for indirect human consumption to Peruvian fishmeal and oil giants such as Copeinca, Tasa and Hayduk. In 2009, it made up 57 percent of the total anchovy catch worldwide, and it is the largest source of fishmeal and oil in the world, leaving many aquaculture companies dependent on the resource.
