Peru’s seafood consumption, including fresh and canned products, reached 461,000 metric tons in 2017.

Per capita consumption in the country increased from 12.9 kilos in 2013 to 14.5 kilos in 2017, boosted by a preference for fish products over meat.

According to the country’s Ministry of Production (Produce), the higher availability of albacore, hake and grey mullet drove up consumption over the period.

The average home expenditure on fishery products also increased during the four-year period, from a 6.5 percent of the shopping bill in 2013 to a 7 percent in 2017.
