North Pacific albacore tuna is gradually carving out a presence in the US market.

Domestic sales have climbed from 5 percent three years ago to more than 25 percent today for members of the Western Fishboat Owners Association (WFBOA), which represents the North Pacific albacore industry.

The product is gaining traction with Whole Foods and other high-end supermarkets, Wayne Heikkila, exeutive director of WFBOA, told IntraFish.

It does have some sustainability bragging rights, after all, being Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified and troll and line caught, which means no Greenpeace attacks about the use of fish aggregating devices (FADs).
