When it comes to unsolved mysteries, the cause of the rapid decline in Pacific halibut harvests ranks near the top of the list.

Analysis from the US-based International Pacific Halibut Commission (IPHC) shows the Alaska halibut biomass has thinned out to the lowest level it has been since the 1920s and 1930s. With the final quota allocation coming in January, the harvest could drop as much as 30 percent or more, depending on what the commission decides at its January meeting.
