Founded last December, Nord Norsk Smolt AS aims to produce up to 12 million smolt a year – nearly twice the size of Norway’s largest smolt plant today.
Nord Norsk says it will meet an existing demand for smolt, particularly in northern Norway, which is reflected by the number of unused farming licenses.
The group has already applied for its first hatchery concession and expects construction to start this autumn and last about 12 months.
By the time it opens, however, its title as Europe's largest is unlikely to hold true.
