The latest breakdown comes after seven years of negotiations in the hopes of securing a new global free trade agreement.
A successfully brokered deal would have benefited Norway’s VAP industry greatly, according to Norwegian Seafood Federation (FHL) Director Trond Davidsen.
“It would have meant a tremendous amount for sectors across the Norwegian seafood industry,” Davidsen told IntraFish. “The collapse is extremely unfortunate.”
Davidsen said an agreement would have boosted salmon and trout value addition, as well as Norway’s shrimp and pelagic industries.
Currently there is a 20 percent duty imposed by the European Union on Norwegian herring and mackerel products.
