Norway has paid around NOK 10 billion (€1.25 billion/$1.96 billion) in EEA membership fees for the period 2004-2009, which effectively gives it associate EU membership.
The funds mainly go to the new EU member countries and fees were last raised in 2007, when Norway and other European Free Trade Area (EFTA) countries were granted access to Bulgarian and Romanian markets with EU enlargement.
Running parallel with negotiations on Norwegian and EFTA’s subscription to the EEA, have previously been negotiations on compensation for lost fish market access.
