The International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES) recommended a 25 percent increase in the 2013 quota for cod in the Barents Sea to 940,000 metric tons, compared to 740,000 metric tons in 2012.

Iceland’s cod quota is also set to increase, after its Marine Research Institute (MRI) issued findings Friday recommending the government increase the cod quota for the year starting Sept. 1 and finishing Aug. 31 to 196,000 metric tons, up 22.5 percent.

However, MRI recommended the haddock quota decrease from 50,000 metric tons to 32,000 metric tons, a reduction of 36 percent.
