“Why should Norway’s best research institutions -- financed by the taxpayers -- develop new technologies that could ruin Norway’s cutting-edge position in marine farming?"

This question was asked by Tore Holand, managing director of  Midt-Norsk Havbruk, in his address at fish health firm Europharma’s annual Lofot Seminar, held in Mortsund by Leknes.

Holand said prioritizing is off track in Norway. For instance, the largest independent non-commercial research organization in Scandinavia, SINTEF, uses its resources to develop open-seawaters and land-based fish farming.

“It’s my understanding that Norway’s competitors are also working with these sorts of projects, but it can in no way make sense here in this country to spend public and private funds on this type of research and development,” he said.
