After a long and acrimonious legal saga, a minimum import price on Norwegian salmon imported into the EU was set at €2.80 ($4.25) in January 2006.
The MIP was instigated for a five year period, within which time the measure could be removed under a ‘sunset review’ clause if the EU deems the measure no longer necessary, although it is not obliged to do so.
In the most recent round of legal wrangling on the MIP's validity, a complex World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling in November left both sides claiming at least partial victory.
