Norway’s seafood industry plans to target Brazil’s massive sushi market to kick start fresh salmon imports into South America’s largest nation.

Initially fresh salmon consigments from Norway would be targeted at Brazil’s largest cities, starting in Sao Paulo, a Mecca for sushi hosting the largest Japanese population outside of Tokyo.

The Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) says the newly ratified free trade agreement between the European Union and the South American trade block known as Mercosur could help smooth the path for fresh Norwegian salmon into the Brazilian market, which has been virtually exclusive to Chilean producers.
