The two groups have been slow to embrace one another. When the MSC concept was first introduced to NFI members a decade ago, they scoffed at the idea and most dismissed the eco-label program.

A year ago, Connelly -- who joined NFI in 2003 promising to change the organization -- met with MSC Chief Executive Rupert Howes during the Boston seafood show, the first such high-level meeting ever between the two.
