New dietary guidelines are going to be released by US federal agencies for years 2020-2025, and the committee in charge is looking into the value of seafood for pregnant woman and their babies, reports Anchorage Daily News.

Tom Brenna, chair of the advisory council of non-profit Seafood Nutrition Partnership, is advocating for more seafood in the US guidelines. Brenna says there are over 40 studies that answer the committee's question, showing that omega-3 found in seafood is highly valuable for brain and eye development.

Current US dietary guidelines recommend at least two servings of seafood per week, but aren't followed; consumption was only at 16 pounds per person in 2017.

The committee's final meeting for the new guidelines will be in March 2020.
