Cooke Aquaculture’s sea lice research is amping up this spring with a look at how to rid salmon of sea lice.

The wrasse "cleaner fish," commonly used to clean fish of sea lice in Norwegian salmon farms, may have a counterpart that is native to Cooke's home in southeastern Canada. It is called the cunner fish.

Cooke cannot use wrasse because it is not native to waters where its farms are located.

There are now cunners in salmon cages in Back Bay, New Brunswick, and Cooke is testing their effectiveness at fighting sea lice.

The
