“It’s vital to broadcast the actual size and significance of Europe’s total aquaculture production,” according to the Norwegian Seafood Federation’s (SN) Deputy Managing Director Trond Davidsen.
Davidsen, who is also the Norwegian representative at the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP), says FEAP’s latest report must be laid on the table for all decision makers, and also to enlighten the general public.
FEAP recently published statistics for individual European countries detailing production for different species over the last 10 years.
The statistics indicate the significance aquaculture has attained in Europe: Fish farming already directly employs 100,000 people -- in rural districts and along coastlines where there is less opportunity for employment -- and the first-hand value of its production now stands at €8 billion.
“The
