Matthias Keller, managing director at the German seafood association (Bundesverbandes der deutschen Fischindustrie und des Fischgroßhandels), is predicting an industry "race" for several species given lower allocations in the new set of autonomous tariff quotas (ATQs).

The European Union last week adopted the agreement, which regulates import duties for certain fishery products imported into the region for the period 2016 to 2018.

Keller said flatfish and tuna loins could be among the products to reach their quota limits sooner rather than later, which could result in higher cost for both the industry and end consumers.
