In just under a month’s time, new fish and seafood labeling rules will be imposed across the European Union, and with all the additional red tape and higher costs, the seafood industry does not see the real benefit to the consumer.

The new rules, in effect as of Dec.13, are part the revamp of the EU's Common Fisheries Policy, specifically its common market organization (CMO) regulation, which also covers fishing, production and marketing.

The Dec. 13 application date was chosen to coincide with the date other labeling requirements will also come into force under the new food information to consumers regulation.
