Four of North America's largest seafood buyers will announce Wednesday they have joined Canadian frozen foods giant High Liner Foods in supporting the Wild Salmon Center's Salmon Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) Partnership.

The project, launched last year, aims to have 75 percent of the Pacific's wild salmon certified as sustainable by third-party groups, or in credible FIPs by 2016.

The Salmon FIP has already made significant progress on its goals, according to the Wild Salmon Center. In the Russian Far East, for example, the group has established anti-poaching and observer programs that have helped reduce illegal fishing and improve stock assessments in Sakhalin.
