Icelandic fishing firm Samherji and Nergard are all set to form a "strong unit" in the European whitefish industry, Tommy Torvanger (pictured left), CEO at the Norwegian fishing firm, told IntraFish.

On Thursday, the two companies announced Samherji will acquire a 22 percent stake in Nergard through its German subsidiaries Cuxhavener Redeerei and Icefresh.

Under the deal, Samherji will buy 36.5 percent of the shares of Sostrene Nergard AS, which owns 58.3 percent of the shares in the Nergard Group.
