Certification groups assessing fisheries against the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standards have an extremely mixed record of getting the job done on time.

There are 63 fisheries currently in MSC assessment, each at varying parts of the assessment process, and many of them are at least six months, if not much more, past the date originally estimated for their final report.

This is not quite what assessor Intertek Moody Marine leads people to believe in statements it gives in assessment documents.

“Assuming no delays, an assessment typically takes 12 months, but may be completed within a minimum of nine months,” Moody said in the Alaska salmon reassessment schedule document.
