Spanish vertically integrated group Profand, a seafood supplier to retail giant Mercadona, is focusing on business integration and efficiency improvements to offset the impact of a cephalopod shortage from South American and African waters.

The group has operations in various continents catching squid, octopus, cuttlefish and king shrimp, and has processing plants in Peru, Argentina, Morocco, Spain, Senegal and India.

“Last year was marked by a lack of raw material, especially in cephalopods in Argentina and Peru,” Enrique Garcia, general manager at Profand, told IntraFish.
