Marine Harvest warned of a challenging salmon market ahead as it raised its own and global forecasts for this year’s Atlantic salmon production.

The world’s largest salmon producer said its first quarter harvest was up by 29 percent year-on-year to 96,700 metric tons.

That represented its largest “first quarter increase ever,” with growth significantly higher than in the fourth quarter, when it was at around 20 percent, Marine Harvest said.

An extra 50,000 tons

Consequently the group said it increased its own production forecast by 20,000 metric tons for 2012 to 380,000 metric tons -- above market expectations of 365,750 metric tons.
