Workers at the Chamiza and El Tepual factories will be affected, according to newspaper El Llanquihue.
El Tepual is Marine Harvest’s largest plant, and is located near the airport servicing the capital of the salmon region, Puerto Montt.
Personnel manager Vilma Caviares of Marine Harvest Chile blamed the lay offs on the disease situation ravaging Chile’s salmon industry.
The fired workers received an average payout of $4,287 (€2,901).
The average monthly wage in Chile’s salmon industry is $465.91 (€315.37) -- substantially more than the countrywide average.
