A pivotal moment is coming in salmon farming -- the first certification of a salmon farm by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). But Marine Harvest’s breeding director Petter Arnesen says it won't be easy.
“The standard that has come out sets an unprecedented standard for sustainable food production,” Arnesen told IntraFish.
Arnesen was one of nine people on the World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) nine-person steering committee* in the Salmon Aquaculture Dialogue, which developed the global standards for salmon aquaculture. He calls the collection of standards "an achievement in itself," and the process to develop them "the most thorough discussion ever between industry members and members of various organizations" but said the standard will be "relatively costly" to implement due to the sheer number of requirements.
