Marine Harvest Canada (MHC) is changing its fish farming practices in an effort to minimize interactions with seals and sea lions at its salmon farms.
Such interaction resulted in 124 seals killed in the first quarter of 2011 and 92 in the second, which was a two-fold increase over the same period in 2010 and four-fold over that of 2009, MHC said.
"It's imperative that we take all necessary steps to eliminate lethal interactions,” said Clare Backman, MHC's sustainability programs director.
MHC has invested in additional protector netting at high risk farms, said James Gaskill, MHC's Production Director.
