Intensive finfish cage culture is developing in North Africa and shows potential for increasing aquaculture production in other countries on the continent, according to information garnered for IntraFish's new and exclusive industry report.

Production systems and technologies in North Africa, of which Egypt is by far the biggest producer, range from extensive aquaculture in ponds, lagoons and coastal areas, to semi-intensive farming in ponds and lagoons, intensive culture using tanks and cages, and recirculating aquaculture systems.

Brackish water aquaculture dominates production, as indicated by the species grown -- 99 percent finfish, particularly Nile tilapia and flathead mullet -- with marine farming of sea bass contributing only 1 to 2 percent.
