An invasion of mackerel in the Norwegian Sea -- northwest of Norway -- may to be blame for much of the decline in wild salmon stocks, marine scientist Jens Christian Holst told Norwegian newspaper Sunnmorsposten.
Plankton in the Norwegian Sea is now an exhausted resource, and it is due to overgrazing by large mackerel stocks -- which used to be fished by recreational fishermen -- says Holst, who recently quit the Norwegian Institute of Marine Science to conduct private activities.
He also criticized the scientific council for salmon management and the Norwegian EnvironmentAgency (DN), which he believes is not concerned enough with studying salmon stocks in the ocean.
