Marks & Spencer and Waitrose signed the Environmental Justice Foundation's (EJF) Charter for Transparency to ensure their seafood supply chain is free of illegal fishing.

Co-op, Sainbury's and Tesco have already signed on to the EJF initiative.

The charter recommends retailers and suppliers use traceability tools to provide evidence that the fish is caught legally and ethically.

EJF involved supermarkets in the charter to help pressure the government to implement reforms in the fishing industry.
