This year, the smallest salmon have got off to a narrower start than for the same time last year, according to the latest statistics from the Directorate of Fisheries.

At the end of June there were 10.1 million salmon in the sea that were released in 2008 and 128 million salmon that were released in 2009. This is a good deal lower than for corresponding figures for the previous year, that gauged the 2007 and 2008 releases.

Meanwhile the growth rate for fish this year is better.
