Discounter Lidl Germany is pledging to only sell 100-percent Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified fish and seafood under its own-label brand by 2017.
At the same time, it committed to only offer Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) or Bio-certified farmed fish and seafood by 2018.
In addition, it aims to feature QR codes on all packages of fresh, frozen, canned and deli fish by the end of 2016, offering full product transparency and traceability to its customers.
The retailer published these ambitious goals in a recent position paper, which sets out the basis for the purchase of fish, shellfish and related products at Lidl Germany.
