Toxicologist Baard Johannessen, who runs Nettforsk in Arendal, Norway, has applied for patent protection on a method to combat salmon lice, which his experiments reveal also is effective treatment for resistant lice.
He uses medication from two different pharmaceutical firms in a particular combination. The secret is sequence, dose and treatment time, he told IntraFish.
“This way we can extend the ‘shelf life’ of already existing medicines. Thus the pharmaceutical firms aren’t standing in the way of my method if fish farmers want to use it,” Johannessen said.
