US Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska equated Thursday's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of genetically modified (GM) salmon approved to a science experiment, and vowed to fight to have the fish properly labeled in stores.

The FDA approved the AquaBounty's new Animal Drug Application for the production, sale, and consumption of its AquAdvantage Salmon after two decades of evaluation.

“I am in shock today at the FDA’s abrupt announcement to approve genetically engineered ‘salmon’—what seems to be more science experiment than fish or food,” Murkowski told IntraFish in an emailed statement.
