The Carlsbad, Calif.-based company that has grown hybrid striped bass for more than two decades is branching out into several arenas outside the world of aquaculture – but which will have benefits for its fish farming business, as well.
The company spent the last three years involved in a government-funded research effort into use of bacteriophages -- naturally occurring viruses that have evolved to attack very specific host bacteria. They invade bacterium, reproduce within the bacterium and exploit the nutrients inside the bacterium, killing the host in the process.
