The meeting, attended by more than 20 countries, failed to adopt any suitable jack mackerel protection measures as of Jan. 1, when the current temporary measures expire.

“We’re disappointed by what happened in Auckland and believe the conservation of natural resources was a fiasco,” Federico Silva, president of Chile’s National Fishing Society (SONAPESCA), said in a press conference.

Chile was the driving force behind measures to regulate and limit access by foreign vessels.

“The temporary measures to regulate jack mackerel catches adopted by the meeting of more than 20 countries are not in keeping with the current status of this resource," he said.
