An enhanced North East Monsoon brought weeks of torrential rainfall to southern and eastern India for much of November and early December, with subsequent floods wiping out a vast number of shrimp farms and crops in the region, according to industry players.

The most heavily affected states were Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, where many shrimp farms are located.

According to V. Padmanabham, president of the Seafood Exporters Association of India, said close to 4,000 hectares of ponds have been impacted in Tamil Nadu, 3,500 hectares in Adhara Pradesh and around 1,000 hectares in Chennai.
